Snorkeling at Pele’s Chair

Oahu Hiking - Hike & Swim at Pele's Chair

Swim and Snorkel at Pele's Chair

Most folks make the hike to Pele’s chair to jump off the pole, but did you know the snorkeling is excellent? Bring your gear!

A great snorkeling spot

Our family has been going to Pele’s chair for years and for the first time we brought our snorkel gear and what a pleasant surprise. This place is great! The coral reefs opposite the pole area are fairly pristine with plenty of fish and if you go near the rockpiled elbow you’ll also find lots of crevices and coral teeming with fish.

Easy to get around

Depending on the tide when you visit, the whole area is relatively shallow. There is a large sandy bottom that is surrounded with fish-friendly coral reefs and large rocks. The relatively unpopulated area and is wide mouth to the open ocean invites all kinds of fish. We saw several large schools of tiny fish numbering in the thousands, something we’ve never seen at Hanauma bay.

Another great free thing to do on Oahu

Even though Hanauma Bay is nearly free, snorkeling at Pele’s Chair is completely free. Park at the free lot, bring your gear and dive in. You’ll love it!

Hiking Gear Guide

Experienced hikers know what to bring, and here’s a guide for the rest of us:

• Water (lots!)

• Hat, large enough to give you plenty of shade. Personally I like the large “Chinese” hats.

• Good hiking shoes. Either that or go barefoot, like I do!

• Light lunch for your reward at the end of the trail.

• Nuts and energy snacks for along the way of particularly long hikes.

• Camera

• Sunscreen

• Binoculars

• Depending on conditions, leave a change of shoes and clothes in the car.

• GPS unit.

• Walkie-talkies for the group.

• Wireless phone
