Look out at the Ocean Views along the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail

Oahu Hiking - Makapu`u Lighthouse Trail

One of the most striking features of the Makapuu Lighthouse Hike are the incredible ocean views.

A great, free thing to do on Oahu: take in the ocean views on your hike to the Makapuu Lighthouse

Trails near the ocean

One of the great features about this hike is the the trails almost always give you an ocean view.  Some are more sweeping than the others, but the ocean is almost always there. Take the time to stop frequently and take in the views. It's worth it!

Trails near the cliffs

Another great feature along various points on the trail are steep cliffs that plunge hundreds of feet straight to crashing waves below. There are a few shots in this video which give you an idea of what this looks like. If you've got fear of heights, this is a great way to get over it!

  • Current Beach Information for Makapu'u Beach Park, Windward Shore (Oahu) 5/19/2012
Beach Condition: Moderate — Normal caution advised. Be vigilant of changing conditions especially at beaches known for strong shore breaks and on exposed rocks or cliffs near the ocean. Avoid exposed rocks that are wet from surf. Watch for holes and channels in shallow water.

Offshore Condition: Moderate — Normal caution advised. Approach the ocean with caution. Be alert for choppy seas, currents, and breaking waves. Weak swimmers should not venture offshore as the seafloor drops off quickly and tidal currents and winds are strong on many island shores. Users of kayaks and other unpowered craft must be aware of strong wind and current conditions that can carry you offshore, and are capable of changing unexpectedly.

Surf Report: SURF ALONG SOUTH FACING SHORES WILL BE 1 TO 3 FEET THROUGH SUNDAY

Hiking Gear Guide

Experienced hikers know what to bring, and here’s a guide for the rest of us:

• Water (lots!)

• Hat, large enough to give you plenty of shade. Personally I like the large “Chinese” hats.

• Good hiking shoes. Either that or go barefoot, like I do!

• Light lunch for your reward at the end of the trail.

• Nuts and energy snacks for along the way of particularly long hikes.

• Camera

• Sunscreen

• Binoculars

• Depending on conditions, leave a change of shoes and clothes in the car.

• GPS unit.

• Walkie-talkies for the group.

• Wireless phone
