Water Safety

A word about water safety.  Before you go into the water on any beach on Oahu, ask yourself if you have ever been in water that rough before and if you haven’t either don’t go in or exercise extreme caution. Many people drown here every year.  Don’t let this happen to you.

Swimmer in rough waters

If you’re going to swim in water like this, you better be a strong swimmer and very familiar with the area.

Notice how this swimmer is just a few feet away from rock crashing surf yet he is in total control.

Watch how he flows with the surge of the surf, yet stays very calm and confident as he makes his way to the rocks where he eventually will climb out.

Swimming in mild waters

Now while Halona Cove Beach can be pretty rough near its mouth, the inner area is actually shallow and reasonably safe for anyone that has basic swimming skills.

The combination of shallow, sandy bottom and mild surf makes it easy to swim and fun to simply play around.

Even a supervised toddler gets to have a little fun jumping off the rocks into daddy’s hands.

Halona Cove Beach is great to visit

The unique location and surroundings of Halona Cove Beach make it a great place to visit and the swimming is fun for children as well as the most experienced swimmers. The best things to do on Oahu are free and this is Peter Kay with OahuForFree.com.

Beach Gear Guide

Here’s what we tend to bring when planning a full day at the beach:

• Collapsable beach chairs

• Collapsable tent

• Large mat to place on sand, enough for 4-6 people to sit and eat.

• Water, food, and coolers. We love tuna sandwiches so we’ll typically mix up a bunch of tuna and mayo, store it in a container, and bring along a loaf of bread.

• Juice drinks (try Hawaiian Sun brand).

• Chips, nuts, trail mixes.

• Candy bars/nut bars.

• Big hats to shade the sun.

• UV rash guard shirts

• Sunglasses

• Waterproof sunscreen

• Snorkel gear

• Swimming goggles

• Bodyboards

• Fins

• Two beach towels per person

• Change of dry clothes

• Plastic grocery bags (to store wet clothes)
